The Camel Valley Cycling and Triathlon Club ROAD RACE SECTION

Road Race Report 2006

Well, what a season of road racing.  Myself (`Milly'), Mark Barlow and Sam Hughes were trying to
make a good showing with some good resuilts.
Mark Barlow started the season in good form with a 13th in our own road race.  The beginning of
the season started slow for myself with a training camp to Mallorca.  On my return I decided I
was going to support Mark Barlow so we got started.
The first race was the Penzance Wheelers Crit at Portreath.  Well what a start, I came off with
four laps to go.  Mark on the other hand came 3rd and was looking good for his Cat Two Licence.
Well, it came to the Brent Tor and as I waited at the start line my legs felt like jelly.
Anyway, off we set and I struggled at first just with the sheer pace but after half an hour I
settled in just fine. Mark was looking good until his chain came off.  He promptly fixed this and
continued but then disaster struck, his chain came off for the second time. Unfortunately, at this
stage in the race, it was too late and he had expended too much energy to get back on .  With two laps
to go, I decided to have a go and got across to a six man break and won the sprint to come 10th which
I was well pleased with.
On to the Regionals; this was a big test as we were competing against Elite Cat 1 and Cat 2 riders.
We did not do bad, Sam Hughes winning the juniors and myself coming 13th overall.
We have come to my very first stage race: Day 1 - The Time Trial
Mark Barlow was flying and obtained a 4th place and was looking good for a high position overall on
to the crit same day.  I blew up and dropped out.  Mark on the other hand looked fast and had another
high position and was looking very good for a top 10 overall.
On to Day 2 - The Road Race
The weather was fine so I was hoping for a better performance than the previous day which was a disaster.
For for me it all started well and went better ending with 6th place and Mark Barlow had a 9th overall
which was a fantastic result for two very hard days.

On to the next part of the season and to be honest I was out of it but Mark Barlow just went from strength
to strength with a win and a second at  Hilton crit race to gain his Cat 2 Licence.  I finished off with
27 points (13 short of my Cat 2 Licence). I will try again next season.
My Congratulations to Mark Barlow and Sam Hughes on their achievements, its not easy.
To anyone who enjoys a challenge, please have a go, it's good fun. DONT FORGET 29/04/07 OUR ROAD RACE AT DAVIDSTOW.
